Scammers target deputies' fundraiser

MERIDIAN — It may surprise some people how criminals can capitalize on the sympathy of others but not investigators at the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department.

The LCSD has fielded several phone calls about solicitations of cash for two LCSD deputies who are fighting cancer. The Rivers and Robinson Car Show and Vehicle Extravaganza will be held Aug. 24 with proceeds going to rising bills incurred by deputy Hubert "Sarge" Rivers and Sgt. Thomas Robinson. But criminals, according to LCSD Maj. Casey McElhenney, are using this event to try and swindle people out of their money.

"We are not doing any sort of phone solicitation for the event," McElhenney said. "If someone contacts you about contributing to these two deputies, hang up on them. Just come to the event Saturday and you can help all you want then but this is someone's sick idea of making a quick buck."

The event will be held at Northeast Park located at 7300 Newell Road off Highway 39 North. It will begin at 9 a.m. and last until the last band stops playing.
