Two juveniles arrested in car burglary cases

MERIDIAN —     Two juveniles have been taken into custody and at least two others are being sought by local law enforcement authorities.

Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department Chief Dep. Ward Calhoun said two 16-year-olds surrendered Tuesday to Kemper County Sheriff's Department deputies and Meridian and Lauderdale County authorities after leading local agencies on a car chase that began inside the city of Meridian.

Calhoun said the two juveniles are in custody in connection with auto burglaries reported in the northeastern part of Meridian and the surrounding county.

"The chase was initiated by patrol units of the Meridian Police Department and the chase made its way down Van Zyverden and Briarwood roads onto Highway 39 North," Calhoun said. "We joined the chase up Highway 39 into Kemper County."

Calhoun said the vehicle the juveniles were in had a flat tire just as Kemper County Sheriff's Department units were closing in from the north. Calhoun said the juveniles stopped the vehicle and gave up.

Calhoun said during the chase the teenagers were throwing items allegedly stolen from vehicles and homes. Officers and deputies spent much of the time after the chase going up and down the highway trying to recover what they could.

"Among the items we did recover were two handguns so we are pleased to find those," Calhoun said.

Calhoun said several county residents have contacted the LCSD to inform them of items they have had stolen from their vehicles and homes. Calhoun said investigators are working hard to get those items back to their rightful owners.

Investigators are also trying to locate two other juveniles who are thought to have been part of the group who for some time now have been allegedly burglarizing vehicles and homes.

"The investigation continues as we try to flesh out the scope of what these people have been up to," said Calhoun.
