Fatal Crash

Three die in collision on Hwy. 19 North

MERIDIAN —     Officials said Thursday that none of the four people involved in a two-car crash on Highway 19 North, including the three who died, were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.

Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler said the names of the three fatalities were being withheld until all relatives could be notified.

All three occupants of a Lincoln Continental died in the wreck, Cobler said. A 71-year-old man was driving, with a 21-year-old male passenger in the front, and a 20-year-old female passenger in the back seat.

Cobler said the 71-year-old man was a Lauderdale County resident, while the 21-year-old in the front passenger seat had a Missouri drivers license. Cobler said Thursday afternoon the identity of the female in the back seat had not been established.

Cobler said the second car in the wreck, a black Chevrolet Camaro, was driven by a Neshoba County man, who was transported to a Meridian hospital emergency room for injuries that included head trauma. Cobler didn't believe the man's injuries were life threatening.

Mississippi Highway Patrol authorities at the scene said at about 1:30 p.m., the Lincoln was crossing over the southbound lanes of Highway 19 North at Highway 494 in Suqualena when it was struck in the passenger side by the southbound Camaro.

The impact of the collision rolled the Lincoln over. The Camaro came to rest, with the front end bashed in, a couple of feet from the Lincoln.

Cobler said the three occupants of the Lincoln were pronounced dead at the scene.
