Supervisor denies making threat

MERIDIAN —     Monday’s discussion about the controversial county bond issue took another turn when one of those objecting to it told the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors that District Three Supervisor Josh Todd had threatened him prior to the meeting.

    Todd denied threatening Williams.

During the citizens comments portion of the meeting, Tommy Williams, one of the objectors to the bond issue, said Todd had made a threatening remark.

“He said, ‘I’ll be your friend or I’ll be your enemy,’ Williams said. “I said, ‘Look I’m your enemy on this.’ He said, ‘You better watch your back.’”

During the meeting, Todd answered that accusation by saying, “I don’t make threats, I make promises.”

Following the board meeting, The Meridian Star asked Williams exactly what happened. Williams said prior to the board meeting, he was outside the board room in the lobby of the Raymond Davis Annex building. He said he was trying to ask Todd about money in the budget for the project.

The threat, Williams said, came after he told Todd “You need to get into the numbers since you are one of the ones who approved it,” referring to the $14 million bond issue.

It was then, according to Williams, Todd said he would be Williams’ friend or his enemy.

The following is what Williams said was stated between he and Todd.

“I said, ‘Look I’m your enemy on this.’ He said, ‘You better watch your back.’”

Asked about the exchange following the meeting, Todd said he did not threaten Williams.

The following is what Todd said was stated between he and Williams.

"I said, 'You can either be my enemy or my friend.' He said 'You already are my enemy. Then I said 'I'll watch my back. I didn't say, 'You watch your back.' I said 'I'll watch my back.'"

Late Monday afternoon, Williams said he had filed a report with the Meridian Police Department. He said he did not misunderstand what Todd said.

“I know what I heard,” Williams said.
