Police charge man with rape

MERIDIAN —     A Meridian man has been charged in connection with the alleged kidnapping and rape earlier this week of a teenaged girl.

Meridian Police Department Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the MPD's Criminal Investigation Division, said Friday afternoon that Jafron L. Roberts, 30, has been charged with kidnapping, rape, receiving stolen property and disposal of stolen property. Harper said Roberts' bond was set at $350,000 for the rape, and $50,000 bond for each of the charges of receiving stolen property and disposal of stolen property. Harper added no bond was set for the kidnapping charge. Roberts will be held, ineligible to post any bond and get out of jail, until the next grand jury can make a determination as to if an indictment will be handed down in this case.

Roberts is accused of abducting a 13-year-old girl as she walked early Tuesday morning to school on the east side of Meridian. Police said the incident occurred around 8:25 a.m.

Harper said because of the sensitivity of the incident, information about the location of the alleged kidnapping and rape, and the name of the school the girl attended would not be released.

After the incident the girl was released by Roberts and she reported the crime to authorities, police said. She was taken to a Meridian hospital for treatment and examination.

Harper said through the cooperative efforts of officers with the MPD's CID and Patrol Division, working in concert with members of the Crisis Intervention Team of The Wesley House, an accurate description of Roberts and the vehicle in which he was driving was obtained. Harper said within hours Roberts was located and taken into custody.
