Meridian grocery store among many to be sold

MERIDIAN — Piggly Wiggly on North Hills Street in Meridian is one of 44 stores to be sold by Oct. 4 under a restructuring agreement reached with parent company Belle Foods.

Belle Foods has stores in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi operating under the names of Belle Foods, Food World, Piggly Wiggly and Southern Family.

The 44 stores up for sale are in addition to 13 stores owned by Belle Foods in Alabama, Florida and Georgia originally targeted for closing, some of which could also be sold.

According to Supermarket News, Kansas City, Kan.-based AWG had filed a "stalking horse bid" Sept. 20 as a way to set a minimum level for bidding on the Belle Foods stores. However, no other companies submitted bids.

Carl Marks Advisory Group has been appointed as the chief restructuring officer for Belle Foods, according to AL.com.

Belle Foods has 27 stores in Alabama, 14 in Georgia and three in Mississippi.

R&R Foods (Ramey) is taking a Starkville Piggly Wiggly store.

Efforts to get comments from Triple V, R&R Foods, AWG, and Belle Foods were unsuccessful.
