Fugitive arrested in Meridian

MERIDIAN —        A man who was wanted in Texas was arrested in Meridian Thursday.

Meridian Police Department Capt. Dean Harper said Friday afternoon Charles D. Spencer, 48, of Hattiesburg, was taken into custody by officers of the MPD and charged as being a fugitive from justice. Harper said Spencer was arrested after a resident called 911 Emergency Dispatch to report a suspicious person.

Detectives with the MPD are also investigating two alleged robberies reported Thursday, according to Harper.

At about 5 a.m., police responded to a strong armed robbery report in the 600 block of 52nd Avenue. A woman told police she was robbed of her purse by two black men who ran away. The victim was not injured.

Also, at about 8:35 p.m., Harper said police received a report of another strong armed robbery, this time in the 1600 block of 11th Avenue. An 88-year-old man told police he was robbed of his wallet while in his home by a lone black man.     The victim, who was unharmed, told police the man ran away on foot.

Anyone with information about these incidents is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 601-485-1860.
