Meridian Symphony Chorus set to sing Brahms’ Requiem

MERIDIAN —      Mark your calendars for Sunday, April 28, to hear the Meridian Symphony Chorus and Orchestra in a presentation of  Brahms’ German Requiem. The concert will be performed at 3 p.m. at Highland Baptist Church. The Requiem will be conducted by Dr. Robert Hermetz, and will be sung in English. Soloists are Pavel Baransky, baritone, and Lori Joyner, soprano.

This dramatic seven part work ranks among the greatest settings of this form, consisting  of selected Scripture passages from Martin Luther’s translation of the Bible, according to a press release. Included are a Benediction of consolation for the living (“Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted” from Matthew 4), and a Statement of Faith for the departed ( “Blessed are the dead who died in the Lord” from Revelation 14). The German Requiem is not liturgical in the traditional Latin Mass form, and might be more properly called a Protestant Requiem.

Lori Joyner, a native of Meridian, will be featured soprano soloist for the Requiem. She began her music education at Meridian Community  College as a student of Dr. Bob Hermetz. She sang the role of Mabel in  MCC’s production of Pirates of Penzance in 2004. Lori received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Mississippi. In the Ole Miss Opera Theater she sang the roles of Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus, Ms. Ford in The Merry Wives Of Windsor, and Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore. In her first appearance with the Meridian Symphony Orchestra in 2008, Lori sang the part of Eve  in Haydn’s The Creation.

Miss Joyner was conferred the Masters of Music in Choral Conducting at Ole Miss under Dr. Donald Trott in 2011. Currently she is enrolled in the Doctor of Musical Arts program in Vocal Performance at USM under  the direction of Dr. Maryann Kyle.

Pavel Baransky, a graduate of the Ukraine’s Tchaikovsky National Musical Academy  and a laureate of numerous international competitions is baritone soloist  in this performance. Postgraduate study was accomplished at the Zurich Opera’s “Opera Workshop”.

He is a past Grand Prix winner of the International Opera Singers Competition in Beeskow, Germany, and a finalist in the BBC Competition, and Placido Domingo Competition in 2003.

Baransky has performed in many leading roles throughout the world, including  his debut as Evgeny Onegin at the Hamburg State Opera. He has an impressive repertoire of appearances on such stages as Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and Barbican Hall in London, Radio France in Paris, and Great Hall in Moscow. Recital engagements  have been a prominent  part of his activities throughout the past five years. A recording artist, Mr. Baransky has four CDs  in circulation.
