One student still getting treatment from bus crash

MERIDIAN —     One West Lauderdale school student is still in the hospital with a leg injury that school officials said will require more attention but otherwise those who were involved in the school bus versus car crash Monday afternoon are home.

"The student, an eighth grade girl, is recovering but she does need more attention on her injury," said Ed Mosley, assistant superintendent of the Lauderdale County School District. "It is not a serious injury just something they want to evaluate further. Everyone else was treated Monday and released."

Mosley said 11 of the 15 students were treated for injuries.

Mississippi Highway Patrol officials said at about 3:50 p.m. a Ford Fusion collided with the bus near Highway 19 North and Rocky Ridge Road. The impact of the car sliding underneath the side of the bus was enough to tip the bus over onto its side. MHP officials said the students were able to get out of the bus through the rear emergency door.

MHP officials said the two passengers in the car, who are teachers with the Philadelphia Public School District, had to be extracted from the vehicle. They were taken to Meridian hospitals with what officials said were non-life threatening injuries.

"The first thing we try to determine is how many are injured and how seriously," Mosley said. "These students and children are our most precious resource."

The MHP is still investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the crash.
