The 8th Annual Kid's Cans Canned Food Drive involved 10,164 students from 24 local schools who collected 32,433 cans during Oct. 15-Nov. 2 to help those less fortunate through the work of Wesley House Community Center.
Popeyes and Little Caesars sponsor the event each year and work with schools within the city and surrounding counties.
Participating schools were Calvary Christian, Carver Middle School, Clarkdale Elementary School, Clarkdale High School, Community Christian School, Crestwood Elementary, Enterprise Middle School, Lamar Elementary, Lamar High School, Lamar Middle School, Magnolia Middle School, Northeast Elementary, Northwest Middle School, Oakland Heights Elementary, Parkview Elementary, Poplar Springs Elementary, Quitman Junior High, Quitman Lower Elementary, Southeast Elementary, Southeast High School, St. Patrick School, T.J. Harris Lower Elementary, West Lauderdale Elementary and West Lauderdale Middle School.
Lamar Elementary School collected 4,892 cans to win $500 for the school for the most cans collected.
Community Christian Center with 35 students received $500 for the most cans on a per student average, with students averaging 42.03 cans each for a total of 1,471 cans.
Mrs. Chancelor’s homeroom students from Enterprise Middle School collected 1,822 cans to capture the overall Winning Homeroom.
Mrs. Clark’s homeroom at Poplar Springs Elementary School collected 896 cans to capture the second place Overall Winning Homeroom.
Cans were picked up in two days with the help of trucks and hardworking drivers donated by Long Wholesale, Graham Moving & Storage and U-Save Auto.
