Operation Help plans local meeting

MERIDIAN —     Wendol Lee with Operation Help Civil Rights Group, based in Memphis, Tenn., said Wednesday that he will be in Meridian on Saturday for a community meeting at First Union Missionary Baptist Church, at 610 38th Ave.

Lee said his group has received a lot of letters concerning claims of wrongdoing within the judicial system in Meridian, so the community meeting was scheduled for 2 p.m. It is open to the public.

"Any information we gather, if we find there is enough evidence of illegal activity, not just with kids, with adults, we are going to turn it over to the attorney general," Lee said.

Lee's remarks were in reference to the U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit against the city of Meridian, Lauderdale County, Lauderdale County Youth Court Judges, and the Mississippi Division of Youth Services alleging that they violate the due process rights of juveniles.

The suit was filed in federal court Oct. 24.

Lee said letters he has received describe the local judicial system as a "fraud."

Anyone wanting to contact Operation Help or needing more information about the meeting can call (901) 691-5705.
