From staff reports

Detectives have charged a Georgia man, Charles R. Hughes, 44, with the rape of a local woman.

Hughes' bond has been set at $100,000, according to a press release issued through the office of Meridian Police Department Lt. John Griffith.

Contacted later Tuesday, Griffith said the alleged rape was reported early Sunday morning at a residence located on Highway 19 North. Griffith did not have any information about the condition of the woman who was allegedly raped.

Griffith said Hughes, who is from Ringgold, Ga., was living in the area while working at the Kemper County coal plant.
