Bridge to close in city

MERIDIAN —     The Okatibbee Creek Bridge on Old Highway 80 will be closed beginning Tuesday at 6 p.m.

According to Hugh Smith, public works director for the city of Meridian, the bridge is being closed for repair and maintenance.

"During a recent inspection it was determined that certain critical components of the bridge had deteriorated beyond the point of continued safe operation," Smith said. "Although there is no threat of an immediate collapse, inspection engineers with the Mississippi Office of State Aid Road Construction notified city officials that closing the bridge would be a necessary precaution in order to ensure public safety."

In an effort to reopen the bridge as soon as possible, city officials have already begun the process of identifying solutions. The current timeframe of the bridge closure is approximately one month, Smith said.

Detour signs will be posted along the specified detour route. The detour route, beginning at 65th Avenue and Old 8th Street Road, goes north on 65th Avenue and then turns left onto North Lakeland Drive at the Jaycee Soccer Complex. This is the suggested route for local traffic. Commercial traffic is encouraged to use the interstate, Smith said.
