Recent email scam uses military angle

MERIDIAN —     The lengths scammers will go in order to try and dupe people out of their hard-earned money is seemingly endless as evidenced by the latest scam alert issued by authorities with the Meridian Police Department Thursday afternoon.

According to a scam alert issued by MPD Lt. John Griffith, this latest ruse employs an American serviceman who is basically asking the recipient to help him dispose of a "large sum of money."

According to the scam alert, this particular request for help was sent to MPD Chief James Lee, a sure sign the sender had no idea who he was asking for assistance.

Other scam attempts may use other names who are attached to other U.S. service branches or military units but this particular instance shows a U.S. Army officer as the sender. As in many other email scams, the punctuation and wording of the request is not correct in many instances with the core "hook" or point of the request being someone has a large sum of money they need assistance in getting back to America.

Also, and this is a glaring misstep by the sender considering the upheaval in Syria, the scam alert notes the sender says he has been posted to Aleppo, Syria with U.S. Army units on a peace keeping mission. There are no American military units in Syria as the country is in the middle of a brutal civil war.

Law enforcement authorities strongly advise anyone getting this or any other sort of request for help promising a large sum of money in return for their assistance to just delete the email.
