Berkley Southeast breaks ground in Meridian

MERIDIAN —     The regional office of a commercial insurance firm is building its business and a new facility  to house its operations.

Berkley Southeast Insurance Group has broken ground on a new single-story 10,000 square foot building  at 2760 47th Court Street, according to Jeffrey Carver, regional vice president. They hope to be in the new building by November, he said.

"It will be the home for our current 32 employees," Carver said. "We will have the capacity to have almost 50 people in the new building."

The company handles commercial property insurance, Workers' Compensation insurance, and other policies designed to meet the specific needs of businesses. Carver said the local office handles business from numerous independent insurance agents throughout Mississippi.

In planning the expansion, the company decided it would build its own facility rather than lease.

"In this case, it was a better decision for us to actually own the building," Carver said. "It really solidifies our commitment to this area."

Carver said the company is positioning the building strategically to expand or add on to when and if the need arises.

"We're excited about getting into our new facility and being able to expand our operations," Carver said.

Berkley Southeast Insurance Group was launched in January 2013 to provide standard commercial lines insurance services and expertise to a wide range of businesses in six southeastern states: Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina, according to a press release on its website.

The company primarily serves businesses in the construction, light manufacturing, hospitality, real estate, mercantile, wholesale, and business services industries.
