EMCC art student takes top honors

MERIDIAN — Special to The Star

Samuel Mingo of Philadelphia, an art major at East Mississippi Community College, won first place and $100 in the undergraduate college category of the 2013 Big Read Art Contest: Fahrenheit 451.

The contest was sponsored by the MSU Riley Center, recipient of the Big Read Program Grant, and community partner Meridian Museum of Art. The program is designed to restore reading to the center of American culture.

Community partners focused on the American classic “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. After reading the book, students were invited to create a work of art that represents the book, and inspires them and the community to read more. The artwork of all the winners was displayed Nov. 10-11 in the Grand Lobby of The MSU Riley Center in downtown Meridian, before and after Aquila Theatre’s production of “Fahrenheit 451.”

Mingo and his art instructor, Terry Cherry, attended the play, as well as a pre-show talk by Dr. Steven Aggells, author of “Conversations with Ray Bradbury.”
