Concert series to continue today

MERIDIAN —     Predictions for rain today has prompted the relocation of the second concert in the Downtown – After 5 Alive spring series that will take place this afternoon.

The concert, which begins at 5 p.m., was slated to take place in Dumont Plaza. Because of possible inclement weather, the event has been moved to the Temple Theatre ballroom, organizers said. Parking will be available in the city parking garage.

This week’s featured group is Homemade Jamz Blues Band from Tupelo. Siblings Ryan, Kyle, and Taya Perry have earned the title of Youngest Blues Band to be nominated for a Blues Music Award. They placed second in the 2007 International Blues Challenge, and  are the 2010 Jus’ Blues Music Award Band of the Year.

In addition to their youthful talent, their energetic concerts showcase their homemade muffler guitars, flashing lights, and smoke spitting out of tail pipes. They blend Delta Blues, Chicago Blues, Mississippi Hill Country Blues into a style that is uniquely their own.

“Homemade Jamz is a group we’ve had our eye on and were excited to bring them to our concert series,” said show producer Rick Courtney.  “They will electrify our stage and only accelerate the buzz as Meridian grows as a live music mecca for the region.”

Meridian Main Street executive director John McClure shared Courtney’s opinion saying, “We’re building on the success of last fall’s series and acts like Homemade Jamz and our other spring artists are excellent additions to the parade of top-notch performers we’ve brought to the Dumont stage.

"We’re able to bring this caliber of live music to Meridian for free performances due to strong financial support from our event sponsors. Beyond Capital Financial Management is the presenting sponsor for the series, and the weekly sponsor for this second week’s concert is Sequel Electric.  We are most grateful for all of our sponsors.”

In addition to our sponsors these concerts receive financial support from grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Mississippi Main Street Association.

The March 28 opening concert featured opening act Gypsy Carns, headliner Cross Mountain Praise Band and a surprise performance by pre-teen Jordan Futch, granddaughter of local celebrity Ken Rainey.

“The concert was well received by an enthusiastic crowd of hundreds," event chair Leesa Harris said. "We had many new faces who came to enjoy the genre of music and continue observation of Christian Holy week.”

The Downtown – After 5 Alive series provides the residents of the Meridian area with the opportunity to enjoy a weekly, family-oriented, free mini-festival event thanks to Meridian Main Street. The Downtown - After 5 Alive series will feature concerts on consecutive Thursdays throughout April at Dumont Plaza in downtown Meridian. The events will last from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. featuring local and regional artists and musicians headlining the events.

The dates for the remaining events are April 11, April 18, and April 25.
