Fundraiser Saturday for new B&G Club bus

MERIDIAN — Terri Ferguson Smith

A high school senior has taken it upon herself to help Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi.

Madeline Griffin, a student at Meridian High School, recently told the Meridian City Council about a project to raise money to buy a new bus.

Griffin has been a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club in Meridian for the past four years and she asked Ricky Hood, director, what she could do for the club as a way of giving back. She said Hood suggested that she help the club in its efforts to buy a new bus.

Griffin organized "Catch the Bus," a fundraiser to be held on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Highland Park in Meridian. She said there will be basketball competitions, barbecue for sale, carousel rides, inflatables, music, face painting, a dunking booth and other activities to provide fun for the whole family.

"We're hoping to raise $70,000," Griffin told the council. "As of now, we have already received about $13,000. We would love to have everyone to come out and support it."

Hood said he appreciates Griffin's help and he realizes that there's a long way to go.

"We're not going to raise all the money in that one day," Hood said. "This is a drive. It might take us a little bit longer to get the money. We are committed to getting it done and I know she and her family are committed to getting it done."

Hood said Griffin has been working hard on this project and he is pleased with the example that she is setting.

"It's an opportunity for other young people to see her example and see that she had an idea. She wanted to make a contribution," Hood said. "She is doing this herself. It's not the Boys and Girls Club."

Hood said a new bus will also allow the club to take children on out -of-town trips, something they can't do at present.

Donations to purchase the bus may be sent to:  Boys and Girls Club, P.O. Box 4202, Meridian, 39307.
