Tourism on the trail of rustic roads

MERIDIAN —     There's more to tourism in Meridian and Lauderdale County than meets the eye. Identifying new tourist attractions is the goal behind a new push by Visit Meridian, called Rustic Roads, according to Dede Mogollon, tourism bureau director.

There are the often thought of attractions such as the Jimmie Rodgers Museum, Merrehope, the Temple Theater and Rose Hill Cemetery, but a change in tourism is reaching even further, Mogollon said.

"There is a growing trend for the rustic attractions, the Dunn's Falls, the Causeyville General Store, all the things that are off the beaten path," Mogollon said. "We're reaching out as part of our portfolio here in Meridian, to identify those off the beaten path attractions so we can put a collateral piece together and insert it into our visitor's guide."

Some of the better known off-the-beaten-path attractions include the hiking trails at Bonita Lakes, Simmons-Wright Company in Kewanee, the Causeyville General Store and Dunn's Falls along the Chunky River.

"Those are places we know about but we know that there are places that we are not aware of," Mogollon said.

That's why Mogollon recently asked the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors to think about places throughout the county that might be an attraction for visitors.

"We're asking county supervisors to work with their constituents and identify things in their districts and report them back to us so we can include them in our brochure," Mogollon said.

The public is also welcome to send their ideas in by calling 601-482-8001.
