Election day is here

MERIDIAN —     Voters will narrow down their choices for city council and mayor today as the city of Meridian holds elections.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. today and some races are more contested than others.

In the mayoral race, incumbent Cheri Barry faces a challenge from William Bond Compton in the Republican primary.

Rod Amos and Percy Bland will square off for the mayor's race in the Democratic primary.

In Ward One for city council, incumbent Republican George M. Thomas is unopposed in the party primary. He will meet Democrat Martin M. Jack in the general election in June. Jack is unopposed in the Democratic primary.

In Ward Two for city council, there are no Republicans running, but there is a large slate of challengers in the Democratic primary for the seat held by Mary A.B. Perry. Perry faces opposition from Nathaniel Pringle Jr., Terry L. Stennis, and Kenneth Dustin Markham.

In Ward Three, incumbent Republican Barbara Henson is unopposed.

In Ward Four, there are no Republicans running, but incumbent Democrat Jesse Palmer faces challenges by Craig Houston, John Nelson Sr., and Kim Houston.

In Ward Five, incumbent Republican Bobby Smith is being challenged in the party primary by Randy Hammon. That winner will face Democratic challenger John C. Harris in June. Harris is unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Voters will have to declare whether they want to vote as a Democrat or a Republican today and voters cannot change parties in the runoff election, which will be held May 21 if necessary. However, if a voter doesn't vote in the primary but wishes to vote in the runoff, he or she may do so and can vote for either party.

In the general election, scheduled for June 4, voters do not declare a party.

Independent candidates for mayor and city council will not be in the primaries or runoffs. Their names will appear on the ballot for the general election.
