Special to The Star
The Meridian Star
Twenty-nine years ago, a group of Meridian area Sorority girls, who were years removed from their collegiate days, decided to affiliate with National Panhellenic Conference (NPC,) the governing body of one of the oldest and largest women’s membership organizations that serves as the voice of 26 chartered international sororities/women’s fraternities located throughout the United States and Canada.
That affiliation has been ongoing since the initial gathering took place in the home of Mary Speed, a Chi Omega alumna. Melanie Mitchell, Pi Beta Phi, served as Meridian Area Panhellenic’s first president. Through the years, a “pink Panhellenic bag” and its contents of by-laws, recorded minutes, newspaper clippings, copies of invitations, letters, information forms, and rotation charts has never had a break in a cycle of deliveries that annually rotates among members who plan and implement two major functions during the year—a Sorority Recruitment Information Hour in the spring, and an alumnae/collegian/legacy Holiday Tea in December.
MAP representatives take one look at the caller ID on their phones at the outset of a new year, knowing that soon the pink Panhellenic bag might be on its way. For Sue Thompson, Phi Mu alumna, that called came from Alpha Delta Pi’s Susie Broadhead in mid- March. Broadhead, the outgoing President of Meridian Area Panhellenic, set up a “passing” of the pink Panhellenic bag with Thompson, and on March 26 surprised her with the delivery of an empty original bag as well as a new bag that contained a three decade history of the organization bound in chronological order.
Now, the 2013-2014 MAP officers: Nancy Chisolm, Phi Mu, President; Kristen Hill, Chi Omega, Recruitment Chair; and Cindy Dyess, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Secretary/Treasurer are readying Thompson’s home to host the Sorority Recruitment Information Hour for area high school senior girls and community college transfers who are interested in the Membership Recruitment process. This year’s information session will be held Monday, April 29 at 4817 15th Place in Meridian at 4 p.m. Invitations have been sent to area public, private and home schools in East Central Mississippi for distribution; however, word of mouth is the best form of communication for this, so if you are someone who might be interested in the recruitment process, please consider this as your personal invitation to attend.
The event is for mothers, daughters and designated representatives of Meridian Area Panhellenic. Currently, membership in MAP is Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Gamma Phi Beta, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Delta Zeta, Zeta Tau Alpha, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, Phi Mu, and Chi Omega.
Area alumnae from additional NPC groups are welcome to join. For more information, contact Cindy Dyess at firstname.lastname@example.org.
