MERIDIAN —     The body of a woman who was reported missing earlier this month was discovered in a small pond in Meridian.

Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the Meridian Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, said the woman has been positively identified as 34-year-old Jamie Wilkes, who was reported missing by family members earlier in March.

Harper said at about 8 a.m. Wednesday MPD officers were called to a pond located on Watters Road off Waterview Drive in Meridian to a report of a body in the water. When officers arrived they confirmed the presence of a body and notified detectives and Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler.

Harper said the owner of the pond has been draining the water out of the pond since September of last year. Harper said a passerby saw something suspicious in the bottom of the pond and then notified authorities.

Harper said the body was identified by a family member as that of Wilkes. The body will be sent to Jackson for an autopsy to be conducted. Harper said he could not say if there was evidence of foul play present at the scene.

"The case is under investigation," said Harper. "We are conducting this investigation as a homicide until we have proof otherwise."

Harper said Wilkes was last seen sometime March 2 in the 900 block of 64th Avenue in Meridian.
