MERIDIAN —     Officials with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department say they are looking into an incident in which an inmate at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility located in Lost Gap was apparently stabbed Sunday evening.

LCSD Chief Dep. Ward Calhoun says the victim was taken to a Meridian hospital where he was treated for a stab wound that was not considered serious or life threatening.

"The initial reports we have is that there was some sort of altercation that happened between several of the inmates and during this altercation one of the inmates was stabbed with a homemade knife or shank as it is commonly called," Calhoun said. "The prison did their preliminary investigation and then called us in to assist."

Calhoun says typically there are no arrests made as those who are suspected of criminal activity are already incarcerated. He says the case will be worked up by LCSD investigators and then presented to the October session of the Lauderdale County grand jury.
