Leaky police department roof repairs begin

MERIDIAN —     The new Meridian Police Department station on 22nd Avenue that officially opened May 23 has a leaky roof.

Several waterlogged drop-ceiling tiles fell and water puddled up on the carpet in some areas of the new building following severe thunderstorms that moved through the area recently.

"It was minor damage," Acting Police Chief James Sharpe said Monday. "I have been in constant contact with contractors over the weekend."

Sharpe said roofers began work Monday to patch the roof.

The city is leasing the building from Meridian Law Enforcement, LLC, an entity of Watkins Development, for 20 years at a cost of $305,000 a year, with possible increases every five years based on the consumer price index.

Under the contract, Meridian Law Enforcement is responsible for maintenance to the outside walls, roof, foundation and exterior plumbing.

Sharpe confirmed that it will be up to Meridian Law Enforcement, LLC, to fund the roof repairs.

Watkins Development was responsible for renovating the old Cowboy Maloney building that now houses the police station. Originally, the building was a grocery store.
