Meredith signing today at Mt. Zion

MERIDIAN —     Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church will be the setting for a second book signing today by civil rights activist, author and political adviser James Meredith.

Meredith will sign copies of his book "A Mission From God: A Memoir and Challenge for America" from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. at the church, which is located at 1803 10th Ave. He is also scheduled for a book signing at Meridian/Lauderdale County Public Library from 10 a.m.-noon.

Meridian is among stops of an 82-county promotional tour for the book, which, according to Meredith, was more than 50 years in the making. "A Mission From God" not only reflects on Meredith's personal life, but also offers his insight as to how Mississippi can solve it public education woes.

In 1962, Meredith was the first African American to enroll in the then segregated University of Mississippi, an event considered a pivotal moment in the American civil rights movement. He graduated a year later with a degree in political science for UM, and received his law degree in 1968 at Columbia University.

"A Mission From God," which includes photos, some never published is priced at $25 and is available for purchase through Meredith.
