Bailey VFD to receive grant

MERIDIAN —     Volunteer firefighters in Bailey will be getting some much-needed equipment thanks to a FEMA grant of more than $200,000.

    David Sharp, director of the Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency, told the county board of supervisors on Monday that senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker had both confirmed the Bailey Volunteer Fire Department will receive a $201,250 Assistance to Firefighters Grant through FEMA.

    The grant will pay for new turnout gear, air packs and thermal imaging cameras, which allow firefighters to see areas of heat through smoke and darkness.

    Bailey VFD has about 35 volunteers and three stations, at Bailey, Pine Springs and Shucktown, which serve about 2,000 homes, Sharp said.

    "The turnout gear that we have is out of date," Sharp said. "Some firefighters don't have turnout gear and some air packs are out of date. This is a good time to get the money to replace them."

    Bailey has never had thermal imaging equipment before, he said.

    Also on Monday, the Lauderdale Board of Supervisors signed a proclamation declaring the month of April as Keep Meridian / Lauderdale County Beautiful month and the board approved several requests for travel and training expenses for county employees.
