Making the connection

MERIDIAN —     Just because Rhonda Moore works for Meridian Community College as an instructor in the Nursing Program doesn't mean she knows everything there is to know about classes and subject offerings.

That is why she and her son, Crawford Moore, were on hand Tuesday to collect all the information they could during the Meridian Community College / Mississippi State University College Connect held inside the Graham Gymnasium.

"I plan on taking some classes in the summer to get a jump on law school requirements so we came here today to get an idea of what is offered," said Crawford Moore, 18, who hopes to go to Ole Miss once his studies require it. "I don't want to waste any time in getting my degree."

Candy P. Adams of MSU Meridian and Nedra Bradley, MCC's director of financial aid, are credited with coming together and organizing this event last year. The two women said it is great that the two institutions have come together for the second straight year to provide this service to not only traditional students but also those on the more untraditional path.

"We have GED and testing for those who want to get their diplomas," said Bradley.

"Mainly, though, we are here to help parents and students alike to get information that will help the transition into college," Adams said. "Whereas MCC takes mostly students out of high school, we take a good number of our students from graduate programs and through transfers so this is a big help to them."

Adams said in early conversations with Bradley about the event, the two realized during brainstorming just how daunting and stressful beginning a college education, even at the junior or community college level, can be.

"We are trying to take the stress out of the experience," said Bradley.
