Power company killer convicted

MERIDIAN —     A year after Nathan Baker was shot and killed while trying to do his job, his killer was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

Baker, of Quitman, was 47 years old.

The trial of Keith Davis Sr. 37, was moved from Clarke County to Harrison County and began on Monday, according to Bilbo Mitchell, district attorney. The trial wrapped up on Tuesday and jurors took about an hour and a half to return a guilty verdict, Mitchell said.

On June 25, 2012, Baker, a 21-year employee of EMEPA, was at Davis's rural Clarke County home to either collect for two months past due or to turn off the power, reports said. Mitchell said Baker was shot three times and suffered blunt force head trauma.

Baker's body was then dumped in an area four miles south of Shubuta in Wayne County. Baker's wife called authorities to say her husband didn't come home Monday night and EMEPA officials contacted Clarke County investigators after Baker didn't show up for work Tuesday morning.

Investigators got with EMEPA officials and were able to track the whereabouts of Baker's truck to the last known address — the Davis home. Later that day they found Baker's body.

Davis was charged with murder; his wife Joanne Davis, 34, was charged with accessory after the fact. Her case has not yet gone to trial.

On Tuesday, Judge Robert Bailey sentenced Davis to a life sentence. In Mississippi, Mitchell said, that means no parole.

Mitchell and Dan Angero, assistant district attorney prosecuted the case.
