Two charged in task force operation

MERIDIAN —    Two people have now been charged in connection with a drug task force operation Wednesday and the woman who sustained a gunshot wound to the hand during the service of the search warrant was treated and released from the hospital.

Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department Chief Dep. Ward Calhoun said Thursday afternoon that Donald W. White, 47, and Milton Chuck Stevens, 36, are facing multiple offenses in connection with the search warrant conducted by agents of the East Mississippi Drug Task Force at a home located at 639 block Azalea Drive.

"There may be more arrests in this case as the investigation is ongoing," Calhoun said. "We are processing some evidence taken from the scene and are trying to sort out some other issues."

Calhoun said White is charged with sale of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of Alderol, a prescription narcotic, probation violation, felon in possession of a firearm, and failure to pay child support. Stevens is charged with six counts of contempt of court.

The woman who was accidentally shot by one of the agents during the course of the search warrant was treated for a single gunshot wound to the hand close to the wrist. Calhoun said the woman spent about two hours receiving treatment at the emergency room of Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian before being released. Calhoun said no surgery was required to treat the wound and that the area affected should heal quickly.

Calhoun said the agent who fired the shot is still on administrative leave. The agent's name has not been released by the department. Calhoun said the investigation into the shooting is being conducted by authorities with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the investigation division of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Calhoun said outside agencies, most frequently the MBI, are called in to probe any shooting incident reported by the sheriff's department. Calhoun also said another investigation, this one by the administrative staff of the LCSD, is ongoing.

"We have policy and procedures to use as guidelines and our investigation is to determine if any of those policies or procedures were not followed," Calhoun said.

Wednesday afternoon agents with the EMDTF served a search warrant on the residence after a lengthy investigation into alleged drug activity. Calhoun said several people were inside the home at the time of the search. He said after the shooting took place and the woman injured was transported to the hospital, agents and deputies continued the investigation and search of the home. Calhoun said other items confiscated during the search of the home may be tied to other cases investigators with the LCSD are working.
