Cross-country cyclists to visit Meridian

MERIDIAN —     A group of bicyclists from across the United States will visit Meridian June 18 during the sixth annual summer bicycle ride to raise funds for and awareness of The Fuller Center for Housing’s fight against poverty.

The Fuller Center Bicycle Adventure, featuring more than two dozen cyclists, is making a stop in Meridian during its 3,700-mile ride from Savannah, Ga., to Vancouver, B.C.

The group will arrive in Meridian after a 78-mile ride from Demopolis, Ala., and will be staying overnight at First Baptist Church.

The Fuller Center for Housing, for which the ride is expected to raise more than $200,000, helps lift people out of poverty housing, according to a press release.

At least 18 riders will make the entire 3,700-mile journey, while 20 or more will participate in various segments of the journey. In addition to riding an average of 76 miles per day, they also will participate in several building and repair projects.

The Fuller Center for Housing was founded in 2005 by Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and Habitat for Humanity founder Millard Fuller and his wife, Linda, as a continuation of the affordable housing ministry they started 40 years ago. The Bicycle Adventure is The Fuller Center’s single biggest fundraiser, having generated more than $750,000 in the past five years for the fight against poverty housing around the world, the press release states.
