Officials commend EMCC's National Championship football team

MERIDIAN — Special to the Star

    The Meridian City Council and Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors have presented East Mississippi Community College with commendations recognizing the school’s 2013 NJCAA national championship football team, coaches and staff.

    Both ceremonies were held during recent regular meetings. The commendations noted that the Lion football team has brought positive recognition to EMCC, including three MACJC state football championships in the last five years, and two NJCAA national championships in last three years.

    The commendations also noted these athletic and academic accomplishments for the 2013-14 school year: 1) cumulative 2.90 grade point average; 2) 18 players who graduated in December with a cumulative 2.50 GPA who are Division I eligible under the new NCAA standards; 3) six players chosen as NJCAA All-Americans; 4) 14 players who signed letters of intent with four-year colleges and universities during the mid-year signing period; and 5) Junior College Coach of the Year honors for head football coach Buddy Stephens.
