MSU-Meridian to host spring GMAT workshop

MERIDIAN —     Those thinking about going back to school to get an MBA are in luck. A workshop for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), the standardized test required for acceptance into graduate business programs at most universities and colleges in the United States, will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 at MSU-Meridian Downtown Campus.

The MSU-Meridian Division of Business will host the workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in room 201 of the Newberry Building. The fee, which is $45, will cover the cost of the study guide manual, materials for the workshop and lunch.  Deadline to register is Jan. 24.

According to Dr. Natasha Randle, coordinator of the workshop and associate professor of Management at MSU-Meridian, “We get a lot of questions regarding the GMAT and we know this workshop will answer those questions for students, reduce GMAT anxiety, and work toward increasing scores. The GMAT is meant to measure a student’s potential to succeed in graduate business school.  The purpose of this workshop is to review the verbal/writing and quantitative portions of the GMAT and to discuss test taking strategies.”

Presenters at the workshop will be Dr. Lin Ge, assistant professor of Statistics, who will cover the quantitative portion of the GMAT and Dr. James Kelley, associate professor of English, who will lead discussions on preparing for the verbal/writing portion.

“Taking the GMAT, which is a computer-based test, can be overwhelming,” said Dr. William Hill, division head and associate professor of Marketing at MSU-Meridian. “The test format is often considered rigorous and many people get discouraged. It is important that anyone planning to take the exam familiarize themselves with the format, time constraints and specific focuses of each section, and practice, practice, practice.

"We believe this workshop will help students in their test preparation.”

In Mississippi, the GMAT is given year-round at testing centers at Mississippi State University Starkville, Jackson and other locations around the state.

To register for the GMAT workshop, contact either Randle at 601-484-0254, nrandle@meridian.msstate.edu or Stacy Parkes at 601-484-0156 or sparkes@meridian.msstate.edu.
