LCSD probes shooting

MERIDIAN —     Investigators with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department are continuing to look into a shooting incident that reportedly occurred early Sunday morning in which one person was injured.

LCSD Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said deputies were called at about 2:15 a.m. to a residence on Promise Acres Road, just off Fairchild Road, to a report of shots fired. Before deputies arrived on the scene they came across a vehicle that apparently ran off the road into a ditch on Morgan Road. One of the occupants had a bullet wound to the leg.

"Investigators in the case said the man was shot by a woman at the residence on Promise Acres Road after she told the two men to leave," said Calhoun. "The man who was shot was banging on the door looking for a certain woman who lived there but she wasn't home. The other woman told investigators she told the men to leave repeatedly but that they wouldn't."

Calhoun said the woman told investigators she went and loaded a handgun she had in the house and when the man continued to bang on the door, she opened the door and shot him in the leg. Calhoun said the car the two men were in was also hit by at least one bullet.

The men then left the residence and subsequently ran off the road getting stuck in the ditch.

The man shot in the leg was transported to a Meridian hospital for treatment. The other man, Darrell Chase Hatcher, 35, of 4902 15th St., Meridian, was arrested for DUI. The name of the man shot has not been released. Calhoun said the woman has not been charged with any offenses.

Calhoun said the case will be turned over to a Lauderdale County grand jury for consideration.

In a separate case, LCSD investigators are looking into the burglary of the Alamucha Volunteer Fire Department on Highway 496.

Calhoun said it is not clear when the burglary occurred, only that volunteer firefighters Saturday afternoon discovered an entry point at the back of the building. Calhoun said several items, including air packs, a generator and other firefighting equipment was reported missing.
