MERIDIAN —     Officials with the Lauderdale County Sheriff Department are investigating an early morning auto burglary involving an adult and two minors.

According to Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun, the incident occurred Tuesday at 12:45 a.m. on Highway 19 North and State Boulevard Extension. A deputy patrolling near the area heard multiple gunshots.

"Upon investigation, he stopped a vehicle. During the course of the investigation, three individuals were taken into custody," Calhoun said.

James Edward Lewis Jr., 30, has been charged with one count of auto burglary. One male juvenile was charged with possession of burglary tools, and a second male juvenile was charged with possession of a stolen weapon.

"The weapon was the firearm that the deputy heard the gunshots from," Calhoun said, noting that the gun was not shot at the deputy.

No bond has been set. The investigation is ongoing.

"We anticipate additional charges being filed against these individuals. Investigators are still working leads from evidence recovered in the vehicle," he said.
