Eighth murder victim identified

MERIDIAN —     The name of Meridian's eighth murder victim this year was released Friday morning by Lauderdale County officials.

Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler said Guerra Salvador, 38, died Wednesday night after allegedly being robbed and then fatally shot by 18-year-old James Henderson III after Salvador reportedly was walking back home from a neighborhood store. Henderson has been charged with capital murder.

Lt. Dean Harper, commander of the Meridian Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, said Salvador was shot at about 6:30 p.m. at the corner of 49th Avenue and Fifth Street. Henderson was captured by a MPD patrol officer after a short foot pursuit.

Harper said Wednesday night the officer was patrolling the area and was right around the block when the shooting broke out. He said the officer heard the shot and observed the suspect running from the scene. Harper said the officer got out of his patrol unit and chased down the suspect within a half block.

Harper said a handgun thought by detectives to have been used in the incident was recovered and that the suspect was taken to the MPD Wednesday night for questioning. Formal charges were filed later Wednesday night.

Harper said paramedics from Metro Ambulance arrived on the scene minutes later to find MPD officers giving the victim CPR. The victim was taken to a Meridian hospital but died a half hour later.

Harper did not say how many times the victim had been shot as the investigation is continuing.

Harper said no motive has been determined but he said from all early indications this incident was not associated with any gang activity.

If convicted of capital murder, Henderson could be eligible for the death penalty.
