Homeowner surprises 3 burglary suspects

MERIDIAN —    Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department authorities apprehended two of three men who, while in the process of allegedly burglarizing a home, were surprised by the homeowner.

The two men who were taken into custody shortly after noon Wednesday are expected to be formally charged this morning while local law enforcement authorities are keeping an eye open for the third suspect who was able to elude deputies and tracking dogs in a thickly wooded area behind the victim's home.

According to LCSD officials, deputies were called around 11:30 a.m. to a home located in the 10600 block of Woods Road. When they arrived the homeowner told deputies three people were in his home when he came in for lunch.

One of the suspects was caught almost immediately by deputies and about 30 minutes later the second was taken into custody as he walked along a road near the victim's home. The third suspect ran into the thick woods behind the home which started a manhunt that included the use of tracking dogs.

Several times deputies in the woods glimpsed the suspect but because of the heavy underbrush could not get close enough to apprehend him. Tracking dogs would track and then lose the trail several times. Deputies and officers from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks were stationed at strategic points along Woods Road north to where it intersected with Highway 494.

At about 1:40 p.m. the search was called off.

Most of the property that the homeowner noticed was missing was quickly recovered.
