Teen charged after chase

MERIDIAN —     A local teenager has been charged with multiple offenses after his arrest Monday.

Meridian Police Department Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the MPD's Criminal Investigation Division, says MPD authorities have charged Richard J. Dunnigan, 17, of Meridian, with receiving stolen property and as a felon in possession of a weapon. Harper says Dunnigan has been certified as an adult by the local court system allowing him to be charged as an adult. Because Dunnigan was already out on another felony bond, he is being held in the Lauderdale County jail without bond.

Harper says an MPD patrol unit attempted Monday to make a traffic stop on a vehicle Dunnigan was driving. Dunnigan bailed out of the car that, after an inquiry by police, turned out to have been stolen a few hours earlier. A foot chase ensued and Dunnigan was apprehended a short time later. As Dunnigan was being taken into custody by officers, Harper says a firearm was found in his possession.

Dunnigan will be held until a Lauderdale County grand jury can determine further action.
