Duo bringing fashion week coming to Meridian

MERIDIAN — By Brian Livingston

Monique Pruitt wants to bring a certain style to Meridian.

It is the same fashion people see on the runways of New York City and Pruitt firmly believes it will make a big splash here as well.

"We have a lot of people who work in and around the fashion industry right here in our area but they don't have an outlet to show their ideas or talents," Pruitt said Tuesday during an announcement event held at Merrehope. "I want to bring in vendors from our area, Hattiesburg and the Gulf Coast and New Orleans to show that we in the South have a sense of style."

Pruitt founded the Pruitt Agency and one of her biggest supporters in Meridian Ward 4 Councilwoman Kim Houston who was at the event.

"This is exciting and we are going to show just how creative Meridian can be," Houston said. "Meridian is proud of its music and art legacy but we also have a fashion history that hasn't been talked about yet. That is about to change."

Through a series of shows at a variety of locations around Meridian, Pruitt and Brittani Mayes, president of Fashion Week Mississippi, hope to shine a spotlight on the runway in showing the latest fashion trends before they hit the stores. To help show off those fashions, Mayes said people will be needed.

"We will be putting out a call for models," Mayes said. "Men, women, children, all shapes and sizes, will be required to do these shows."

The first show will be called Paris in the Spring. No date has been finalized yet but Pruitt said it will be the first of many.

"I've just been struck by the lack of a platform for designers in our area," Pruitt said.

Merrehope and the Palms are two of the tentative locations the shows will be held, according to Pruitt. Other areas, many of them historical, will fall in line with the fashion trends set to be sent down the runway and into local retail stores.

"We do have a fashion conscience in Meridian," Houston said. "We do love the latest styles."
