MERIDIAN —     The Meridian Police Department seized nearly $365,000 during a traffic stop on the interstate.

MPD Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, said the money was found in a hidden compartment of a car a patrol officer pulled over on Interstate 20/59.

"The money has been turned over to the city after legal proceedings," Harper stated in a press release. "This will be a big shot in the arm for the department to help supplement much needed supplies and equipment that are vital to the day-to-day operations and long-term goals of the men and women of the MPD."

Harper said the investigation into the stop and the seizure is still ongoing and that he can't release more information at this time. He did say that during the traffic stop the officer used good investigative techniques in order to locate and find the money hidden in a secret compartment of the car. The exact total according to Harper was $364,590 in cash.

Citing a new revitalizing energy at Meridian City Hall and the MPD, Harper said in the release, "This marks the next step in not only curbing crime but taking the fight to the criminal. Hopefully this will be the first of many examples of how the MPD, the new city government, and most importantly, the people of Meridian, will stand together to fight crime and return this city to its former glory."

Harper said possible arrests may be made at a later date depending on the outcome of the investigation.
