Explosives found following traffic stop

MERIDIAN —     Philadelphia police who pulled a man over during a traffic stop early Sunday morning found explosives, a bullet proof vest, several loaded weapons and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

"He probably had between 1,000 and 1,200 rounds of ammunition," said Philadelphia Police Department Sgt. Tavaras Smith, who heads up the department's narcotics unit.

Smith said several guns were seized, including two AK-47s and a MAC-11 pistol illegally altered so it would fire as an automatic weapon.

"All of the guns were strategically placed in his truck so he would have ready access to them," Smith said.

Philadelphia resident Jason Thrash, who is in his 20s, was arrested and faces several charges, including possession of methamphetamine, Smith said.

Thrash was pulled over about 5 a.m. Sunday for minor traffic violations.

The explosives found in Thrash's car are at times used to detonate dynamite, Smith said.
