MHP releases holiday stats

MERIDIAN —     The Fourth of July holiday period that began on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and extended through Sunday at midnight turned out to be especially busy for troopers of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

    MHP Cpl. Andy West, who is the public information officer for Troop H headquartered in Meridian, said there were 1,034 tickets issued, along with 18 arrests for impaired drivers in the Troop H district during this period.

    West says there were 29 traffic accidents resulting in 14 injuries and one death. The death was to Mickey L. Yates, 47, of Decatur, who was the Greenfield Volunteer Fire Department chief. The accident occurred around 8:40 p.m. Saturday on Highway 492 in Newton County.

    West said statewide troopers issued 8,747 tickets and arrested 259 impaired drivers. He said there were 173 traffic accidents resulting in 68 injuries and four deaths across the state.

    Troop H covers Lauderdale, Clarke, Kemper, Neshoba, Newton, Scott, Smith, Jasper and Leake counties.
