Authorities search for hit and run vehicle

MERIDIAN —     Officials with the Meridian Police Department are searching for what they believe to be an older model SUV that struck a pedestrian near Bonita Lakes Thursday night.

A man is in a Jackson hospital being treated for what has been reported as severe head injuries. The man was apparently struck by the vehicle Thursday night after the fireworks show at Bonita Lakes Recreational Park on Highway 19 South in Meridian.

The accident, Harper said, occurred near the entrance to the park. Harper said the victim was listed in critical condition.

MPD Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, said Friday afternoon the vehicle is described as an older model white and gray Ford Explorer.

Harper said the vehicle will have significant damage to the front area, possibly on the passenger side. Harper said the headlight on that side of the vehicle will be missing as well.

Harper said witnesses were not able to get a license plate number of the vehicle.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Meridian Police at 601-485-1893 or Crimestoppers at 601-485-1860.
