Shooting suspect in custody

Victim recovering from gunshot wound

MERIDIAN —     A man Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department authorities listed as a person of interest in the afternoon shooting of another man was taken into custody Thursday.

Richard Martin, whom authorities with the LCSD and agents of the East Mississippi Drug Task Force said will likely be charged today in the incident, was found at a mobile home located in the 1200 block of Sandflat Loop Road hours after he is suspected to have shot a man on Fox Road.

"We followed the information we obtained throughout the afternoon to the residence on Sandflat Loop Road," said LCSD Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun. "We then made the arrest without further incident."

The shooting occurred at about 1:45 p.m. at the intersection of Fox Road and Highway 19 South. Calhoun said Central Dispatch received a frantic 911 call from a woman who told them she was driving into Meridian with a man who was shot once. Metro Ambulance personnel intercepted the vehicle and transported the injured man to a Meridian hospital emergency room. The extent of his wound was unknown.

Later, Calhoun said the woman reported to authorities she was the passenger of a car with a male friend driving when two black males in another vehicle pulled up beside them at the stop sign on Fox Road. The witness said minutes later three shots were fired with one bullet hitting her friend. She got in the driver's seat and began driving toward Meridian to seek medical help.

During the course of the afternoon, deputies and agents went to several locations searching for the person the female witness said pulled the trigger. At about 4:30 p.m., deputies and agents converged on the mobile home taking Martin into custody.
