MCC trucking simulator good for long haul

MERIDIAN —     Meridian Community College revealed its latest commercial truck driving training simulator early Thursday afternoon at the Meridian Community College Workforce Development Center.

The TranSimVS Truck driving simulator was installed at MCC's Workforce Development Center on Highway 19 North, and students are already receiving the updated training curriculum.

MCC officials said the accident reduction, fuel management and reduced equipment are just few of many benefits the new simulator has to offer.

"The commercial truck driving simulator is a tremendous asset for Meridian Community College Workforce Development building," MCC Commercial Truck Driving Coordinator Otis Gowdy Sr. said. "The simulator will allow us to expand the program as well as provide students with an additional opportunity to gain valuable skills. Students are able to utilize a state-of-the-art truck driving simulator that helps prepare them for the actual road driving experience."

MCC already has 52 workforce education programs of study, and officials said they hope this new simulator will help truck driving students become more qualified in a safer manner to themselves and to others on the road.

"This simulator allows us to take a new student and put them in a driving situation without putting other people in danger, said Wayne Lagrone, Workforce Project Manager. "This allows students to make mistakes and learn from them before being put on the highway."

MCC's Commercial Truck Driving Program lasts eight weeks. The program consists of classroom and some actual road driving. Upon completion of this eight week program a student will be awarded a Certificate in Commercial Truck Driving.  Employment in commercial truck driving is expected to rise 11 percent between 2012 and 2022, school officials said.
