Former coach indicted on sex charges

MERIDIAN —     Former Clarkdale High School head girls softball coach Ricky Roberson has been indicted on numerous charges in connection with allegations he conducted and had inappropriate contact with several high school aged girls under the age of 18.

According to the indictment filed Feb. 11 in the Lauderdale County Circuit Court, Roberson is charged with three counts of exploitation of a child and five counts of lustful touching of a child. The charges stem from eight separate incidents that allegedly occurred from a period beginning in June of 2003 and stretching on to June of 2012. The incidents outlined in the indictments allegedly happened at different times during this period and some even overlapped each other.

Roberson was arrested Sept. 27, 2012 and was charged with two counts of lustful touching of a minor while in position of authority and one count of statutory rape. He was placed on $20,000 bond total for the lustful touching offenses and $10,000 for the statutory rape charge. Roberson made bond shortly after being processed into the Lauderdale County Adult Detention Facility.

According to affidavits attached to court documents at the time of his arrest, Roberson allegedly had inappropriate contact with a 10th grade student in 2010 that continued into the 11th grade.

Another affidavit alleges Roberson made inappropriate comments to a ninth grade student up until August 2012. The affidavit alleges Roberson bought the girl gifts and grabbed her in inappropriate places.

Roberson was terminated from the Lauderdale County School District by Superintendent Randy Hodges shortly after his arrest.

Since 1993, Roberson has been coaching girls slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball teams at Clarkdale High School.
