Breakfast at Tiffany's

Seniors hold graduation party

MERIDIAN —     Would that every young girl could grow up with the poise and grace of Audrey Hepburn. Her role as Holly Golightly in the 1961 comedy "Breakfast at Tiffany's" inspired fashion and earned the late Ms. Hepburn an Academy Award nomination.

The film is a favorite of Lamar High School senior Lallie Elise Bennett, whose graduation party had the film as its theme. Jimmie Kay Fisher and other ladies who threw the party for Bennett and her friends thought it a fitting tribute to the senior girls.

A quote from Hepburn was part of the party's invitation and one Fisher hopes will inspire the young ladies.

"For beautiful eyes," Hepburn is quoted as saying, "look for the good in others. For beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone."

    Appropriate ideas, Fisher said.

"It kind of says a lot about young ladies about to graduate," Fisher said.

At the Sunday graduation party in a cozy alley setting behind the Rosenbaum building in downtown Meridian, 24 girls, decked out in beads, dresses, and of course, big hats and big sunglasses, enjoyed a brunch inspired by the film.

"We wanted to do something that was different and fun. We want to encourage these girls. They've worked so hard to graduate. They are brilliant, smart, talented girls who are very busy. We really wanted to honor them," Fisher said. "We're having fun. We're making memories."

Bennett was clearly having a good time living out the "Tiffany's" theme.

"The movie is so classy and elegant. I love movies from that time period," Bennett said. "It's just a timeless piece. Growing up in this kind of crazy world that we live in today, it's fun to look back and see how glamorous things could be."

Bennett said she thinks all young ladies would like to be like Audrey Hepburn.

"It's so much fun just to be with all my friends and do something fun," Bennett said. "We don't have a lot of excuses to go out and eat together. Plus it's fun to dress up and be silly."
