Fugitive turns self in

MERIDIAN —     An armed robbery suspect investigators with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department have been searching for turned himself in to county authorities Monday night.

    Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie said Michael James Reed, 33, of 5161 Highway 19 South, is being held in the Lauderdale County Adult Detention Facility in Meridian on nine felony warrants after turning himself in at about 6 p.m.

    "We were notified by a family member that Reed would be here waiting on us and when deputies pulled up Reed was sitting on the steps," Sollie said.

    On Dec. 27, Reed allegedly robbed at gunpoint the clerk at the Shell Convenience Store in Toomsuba and three other people who either walked into the store at the time of the robbery or who were outside in the parking lot. Reed is charged with four counts of armed robbery, four counts of kidnapping and one count of felon in possession of a firearm. His bond has been set at $25,000 for each charge.

    Since the incident was reported, investigators had been trying to locate Reed without success. Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said Monday afternoon authorities had planned to ask the public's help in locating Reed when he turned himself into the sheriff's office.
