Man shot in dispute

MERIDIAN —     As Sarah Jefferson stood outside her 28th Avenue apartment watching detectives processing the scene of a shooting Monday afternoon, she said she just couldn't get over the senselessness of the whole affair.

"This, over a dog," Jefferson said. "One minute they are talking and then they start arguing and then the shooting starts. I just don't understand it."

One man was taken to a Meridian emergency room where he underwent surgery for two bullet wounds while another man was taken into custody and may be charged later.

Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the Meridian Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, said an argument between the two neighbors around 2 p.m. in the 900 block of 28th Avenue apparently led to the shooting.

"The victim was shot twice and was transported to the emergency room," Harper said. "The victim was alert when he was put into the ambulance."

Harper said the other man was taken into custody at the scene. Harper was unsure what the exact charges would be as the investigation into the incident is still in the early stages.

As a crowd gathered outside 917 28th Ave., detectives went over the scene picking up physical evidence and they talked to those who live in the immediate area. Harper said a handgun detectives believe was used in the shooting has been recovered. Jefferson said police had talked to her.

"The guy who was shot has a little dog that sometimes gets out," said Jefferson, who lives at 905 28th Ave., with her son. "Most times nothing comes from it but today they got into an argument. It was over the dog getting loose that the arguing got really loud."

And a few minutes later the shooting started.

Jefferson said there were three shots, two that hit the dog owner and one that missed.

"I just can't believe someone got shot over a little dog," Jefferson said.
