A man was shot at least once Thursday afternoon in Meridian.

The shooting occurred at 3:55 p.m., in an area of 17th Street between 32nd and 33rd avenues. Residents said they heard an outburst of shots, a delay, and then several more shots. When they emerged from their homes they found a young black man lying on 17th Street suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the back, according to Meridian Police Department Lt. John Griffith.

"I don't have an update on his condition because he is probably still in surgery," Griffith said. "But we did apprehend a person of interest and we are questioning him now."

Griffith said the suspect, a black man, was taken into custody on Royal Road several minutes after the shooting.

Calls into Central Dispatch directed officers a couple of blocks from the shooting where officers found a silver 2001 Lincoln Town Car abandoned on the side of the street. It was the car witnesses say was driven by the alleged shooter.

"We are confident this is the car the shooter was in at the time of the incident," Griffith said.

The car was towed and taken to the MPD for further processing.

As paramedics and detectives converged on the scene of the shooting to lend medical attention to the victim, patrol units were in pursuit of the shooting suspect that was described as a black man with dreadlocks who was wearing blue jeans and a white tank-top T-shirt. Some residents said they saw the suspect running down nearby streets carrying a handgun.

A man who lives close to the scene of the shooting, who wished not to be identified, said he heard three shots then after a few seconds, several more.

"I left Los Angeles for this?" the man asked. "I've seen too much of this in the 43 years I lived in California. I really never thought I'd see this sort of gang bangin' around here."

As the victim was being loaded in the back of the ambulance, his arms could be seen moving. He was taken to a Meridian hospital emergency room for emergency surgery.
