Rooney guest speaker at The Exchange Club

MERIDIAN —     Karen Rooney, executive director of Meridian Main Street was the guest speaker at the Tuesday meeting of The Exchange Club.

Rooney discussed developments that are happening downtown. She asked the members, “have you ever wondered what any one person can do to help heal the global economy? The answer is to think local!”

Rooney said Meridian Main Street is all about keeping dollars local. Last weekend, Meridian Main Street’s Earth’s Bounty farmers market boasted 2,000 attendees and 40 local vendors.

"Meridian Main Street, along with our incredible team of volunteers, has produced and staffed over 30 events during the last year drawing people into downtown, keeping dollars local," Rooney said.

Events included: the all new Entrepreneurs series, Earth’s Bounty, Merry Meridian, Mardi Gras, After Five Alive Concerts, Candy Crawl, Art Crawls, and Downtown clean ups.

"This year, we look forward to adding the Possibilities Tour of Vacant Spaces and the Windows of Wonder," Rooney said.

During the last few months, downtown has welcomed new developments concerning The Threefoot Building, the old Sears Building, Village Fair Mall, Kress Building, Davis Grill building, Hulett Building, the American Legion Building on 4th St., as well as the 5th street MDOT street scape project.

Rooney also reminded the members about upcoming Main Street activities such as the Kid’s Art Crawl, April 22, and the Downtown Clean Up, April 26.  She also reminded them to check the for event details.

The Exchange Club was founded more than 100 years ago by businessmen who wanted to “exchange” ideas on making their community better. The club supports programs that include: Americanism, Youth Programs, Community Service and its national project—the Prevention of Child Abuse.  For more information on The Exchange Club, contact Duffee Williams at
